Services/ Process

From concept to completion

We offer a full interior design service starting from space planning and concept design development over detail design with budgeting and project management.

We guide you through the process from concept to completion.

- Kitchen & Bathroom design

- Laundries, Wardrobes, Offices, Fireplaces, Wine cellars

- Custom furniture design, TV cabinets, Window or Bench seats

- Interior design: Floor finishes, Wall colors, fixtures

Our designs start in modern design software visualizing dreams, but also highlighting problems right at the beginning. Get us involved early.

2. Vision

After the fee proposal has been accepted the fun begins by starting to create a vision board for your home. We will pull up a lot of inspirational images for each room to visualise your brief and develop the first concept ideas. Pinterest and Instagram will be one of our best resources here. The vision or mood board will show the overall look and feel for your project. This will take a lot of collaboration and feedback from you and might take a few iterations but we will keep going until you are happy.

4. Design development

Once the space planning has been completed we will start working in a modern 3D software to look at shapes and proportions from different angles. We will develop ideas and details and visualise them with textures.

1. Initial meeting

Give us a call or send us an email to book your free initial meeting with us, no obligations. At the first meeting we will mainly listen to hear about your project requirements, brief and vision. We will discuss the scope of works, budget and timelines. After the meeting we will prepare a fee proposal (with detailed scope and deliverables) for your consideration.

3. Space planning & Concept

Getting the layout and space planning right is the single most important part of the design process to get it right and working for you. This usually starts parallel with the vision board. Space planning involves drawing up the general arrangement of your whole house, layouting every room to make sure they work by themselves and within the house. For kitchens this involves drawing up the workspaces with appliances and storage solutions but also looking at the distance between kitchen island and dining table and living room furniture. In bathroom we will look at the vanity design to allow enough room to easily get into the bath, shower and toilet. The space plan will be drawn up in 2D computer generated drawings.

5. Finishes & Documentation

Along with developing the design we will select finishes for your home. Stone for benchtops, timber flooring, tiles and fixtures for bathrooms. The finishes will be listed in a finishes schedule. A full set of drawings will be completed with plan views elevations and detail call outs to communicate with clients, builders and other trades involved.

And it does not stop there, we make sure everything gets built to drawings and specifications - we manage the whole process.

Gunnar Friese, Principal designer and founder of 'DLAB - interior design studio' has been growing up in Germany, a country where only perfection is good enough.

Since arriving in New Zealand in 2013, I have been involved in many successful projects working with leading designers, cabinetmakers and wonderful clients.

With a background in designing and layouting cruise ships and superyachts I have been learning from the best and developed a true eye for spatial planning and passion for interior design. A structured approach, technical knowledge and limitless creativity -

make every project a success.

My projects have been awarded with

TIDA Designer Kitchen - highly commended

for two consecutive years in 2021 and 2020.

Where the name 'DLAB' comes from: My interest for design really sparked during my studies.

I loved learning the principles of design, how to illustrate and develop new ideas into actual products. All this was happening in the design laboratory or short 'DLAB' of the university I graduated from in 2011.

When I am not working, I enjoy time with my family on '4WD overland travel' adventures usually also involving kitesurfing, paragliding or surfing.
